Was or were grammar help

Sentence: "There were/was some rumors that this could be an April fool or a prank"

My question/doubt: What would be the right verb in the above mentioned sentence was or were ? My own thinking is it should be were because word rumor is plural. But still I want to confirm it since I'm unsure or you can say in double minds.

Thanks
