Was or were ?

Hi, using "were" in "I wish she were a genius" is because of the lack of reality in the statement, more specifically, it's a wish and if it were reality, we'd use "was" instead of "were" . My question is, is that all there is to using "were" instead of "was" ? Just the fact that it's not real and just a wish?

Venom Snake more specifically, it's a wish and if it were reality, we'd use "was" instead of "were" On the contrary, if it were reality, we'd use a different verb instead of "wish". "wish" is always about the unreal.
