Was or were?

Hello,

I read a sentence earlier and I have a question about the correct word. Her is the sentence:

Still, none of these categories was exclusive.''

Now, I originally thought that since categories is plural, then the following word would be 'were.' However, I'm clearly wrong. Could somebody explain why I'm wrong on this please?

The grammatical subject is none. Both singular and plural verbs have been used with none for more than a thousand years. None of them was/were right.
