"was" or "were"

Hello and greetings!!

Should it be:
For me, most important was the experience gained, the learning imbibed and the memories cherished.

Or

Should it be:
For me, most important were the experience gained, the learning imbibed and the memories cherished.

Could someone also explain the 'rule' regarding this.

hi the answer is was ;because the word is singular.That's the first one.

An argument can be made for both was and were; it just depends on how far ahead the writer is thinking. At the same time, you might consider whether 3 items can all be 'the most'.
