Use was in this case. Were would be used when the subjunctive is needed, as in a contrary to fact.

[I'm doing as you suggest. If there were more evidence, I might do otherwise.]

An interesting bit of trivia I've just stumbled upon:

"...a small group of [emotive] verbs such as regret, marvel, rejoice, and wonder, which can occur with (A) the indicative or (B) the putative should construction, but not with the mandative subjunctivve construction:

I regret that she worries about it / should worry about it / (X) worry

Hmmm. I may be ******** up here.

He wondered what would happen if there were some other reason.

Perhaps prior context alone could not put the original sentence into subjunctive mood.

Sorry, I didn't see your post, MrM. My dog had pressing business in the middle of mine.

Hello, Anon.

This is how I see it.

Both the indicative was and the subjunctive were are correct. Grammar books nowadays,

however, advise us to use the indicative when we use the verbs ask and wonder in indirect

questions.

I didn't like that!

He wondered what he would do if there were some other reason.

I wonder if this insulates us from Quirk's prohibition.

Well, here I am without a Mod, and my edit is stuck again!

He wondered what he would do if there were some other reason for his being apprehended.

I'm trying to decide if this is a legitimate usage of the subjunctive.

Testing for edit.

Edit. Thanks, Lana. It's working again. [Y] - A.
