Was or were ?

hello, I have one question concerning WAS and WERE words.

I listened to 'Bangles - Manic Monday' and she sings in the refrain:

...I wish it was/were Sunday...

I found lyrics with WAS and also with WERE word. According to my listening I think there is WERE, because she sings it long and 'S' letter at the end of the word belongs to Sunday.

Listen to it here:

Do you think there is WAS or WERE?

Thank you very much!

Hi, In the structure I wish + that clause , was and were are interchangeable. I wish that it was/were Sunday. Best wishes, - DJB -

Yeah, but what of that she sings?

There are 2 places where she sings this line. It's hard to tell, but I hear the a (uh) sound in "was" rather than the er sound in were. Perhaps they sung both versions at different times.

Since she sings "rhotically" (she pronounces the R's in the rest of the song), and there's no R in that word, I'd say that word is "was".
