WAS OR WERE?

Would you write The class was given the opportunity to attend football training.

OR

The class were given the opportunity to attend football training.

To me, both are acceptable but "were" is more natural. (I am a British English speaker. )

To me, both are acceptable but "were" is more natural. (I am a British English speaker. There may be differences with American English.)

The only one that seems natural or right to me is "The class was given ...". (AmE)
