Was Or Were?

Hello everyone,

I'm quite interested to know whether we should use was or were in the following sentence:

What many scientists approved (was/were) amazing.

To my knowledge, We should use singular. Actually, I don't know whether that is right or not!!!!

Thanks in advance.
