Was OR Were?

Would you kindly help me on which verb to use in the following sentences?

The bunch of red roses (was, were) placed in two vases.

A bunch of red roses (was, were) given to the girl.

Thanks a lot!

Hi, Daddyjohn. A bunch is countable noun in singular. Thus, "was" is appropriate.

It seems a bit strange to put a bunch in two vases. It might be better to mention that the bunch was divided.

I'm reminded of the poorly written newspaper line heading an article about a terrible accident:
"Man struck by train rushed to two area hospitals".
