was or were?

Should the 'was' in the sentence below be changed to 'were' because it is a conditional sentence?

If the Indianapolis-New England game earlier this month was hyped as Super Bowl 41½, this upcoming game might as well get billed as Super Bowl 41¾.

Well, actually it WAS hyped as Super Bowl 41 1/2. In this case, it's not a condition, supposing something contrary to fact because that's how it really was.

So read this one more like "Given that the Indianpolis-New England was..."

(Is this in reference to Dallas-Green Bay?)
