Was or Is

When you’re talking about a person you had interaction with in the past from minutes ago to last week and you’re describing them, do you use past tense or present tense? For example:

“The girl that was here last night was pretty.

“I hung out with her last week. She is pretty.”

Either one is OK. Both are commonly used.
