Was or have been.

Should it be was or have been in this sentence?

Unfortunately, during the past few months, I "have been/was" busy preparing for my exam, however, I am free now to discuss the matter.

It's 'have been' in BrE, although I think you might hear 'was' from some people.

Hi teacher, I would like to know wheather these sentences are in the simple past and present perfect or simple past continuous and present perfect continuous?

In other words is "preparing" part of the verb or not?
