Grammar

was or has been ?

Hi,
I'm translating something and wonder if what I wrote is correct

Is is correct grammar wise (sequence of tenses) to write :
How has slavery influenced art forms in Europe and in the Americas since it was abolished in 1865 ?

or can I also write :
How has slavery influenced art forms in Europe and in the Americas since it has been abolished in 1865 ?

Could you please tell me which one is correct both grammar and fact wise (slavery was abolished that is a fact so we should be abe to use the past continuous right ?)

thanks a lot !

  • No, you cannot use that: a specific past date is stated.
  • ) I think you are wrong on two counts: (1) 'facts' are irrelevant to verb form, and (2) there is no present continuous in your example sentences.
