Was hoping vs hope

HI teachers~

I am having a hard time figuring out the difference between 'hope' and 'was hoping'.

Would you tell me if there is any difference between theses two sentences.

Researchers are hoping to find a cure for the disease.

Researchers hoped to find a cure for the disease
