"was holding" and "held" (do they mean the same thing)

Hello:

Can we use "was holding" and "held" interchangeable, as I've used in the following sentences? I think both the sentences mean the same thing, but I can't explain why. Could you help me?

1. The girl was holding her father's hand tightly.

2. The girl held her father's hand tightly.

Laborious I think both the sentences mean the same thing, but I can't explain why. Could you help me? I think it's because 'hold' is itself a continuous action.

  • That's part of the meaning of the word.
