"Was he" vs. "If he was"

In German one can say "Wäre er" instead of "Wenn er ... wäre". My feeling is that the same can be made in English, but I am not sure. For instance, is it correct to say: "Was he the tireless fighter for the truth, he could even have performed..." instead of "If he were [or was] the tireless fighter..."

I believe you can if you use "were" but not "was": Were he the tireless fighter for the truth, he could even have performed ... (Note the subject-auxiliary inversion)
