Was gone

Hi teachers,

He was gone.
Is this a sentence in simple past where 'gone' is an adjctive?
If yes, can you give a couple of synonyms for 'gone'?

Thanks in advance

Exactly what the previous post just said, and also "He wasn't there any more".
(for example: "I saw him swimming in the sea, then suddenly he was gone!")
I think in a dictionary this might be described as an adverb though.
