Was getting the impression

Hi

Certain guy was listening to a holophonic recording. He wrote later:

"I stole a look at the reassuring numbers on my watch to make sure where I was. People approached from behind me where I knew there was only wall. By the end of seven minutes I was getting the impression of figures, the embodiment of the voices on the tape. It is a multidimensional 'picture' created by sound.

What does he mean by saying "I was getting the impression of figures"?

Maybe after 7 minutes he started to imagine himself different figures?

OK, but "getting the impression" means he was imagining them? Or felt that some figures existed on the tape?

He could imagine them being there. He could almost see them.
