I'm having trouble with was/were...
I want do describe differences in a new description compared with an old.
Let's say I added the word 'cars' to the description.
Should I use "cars was added" or "cars were added"? There are of course no actual cars added de facto, only the word cars.

You are referring to a word. One word. You even used the word 'word'.
So if you have a description of something, i.e., a group
It should be "was", but it is necessary to put "cars" in quotation marks or italics to show that it is a mention of the word and not a use of the word:
"cars" was added
the word "cars" was added
