was expected/was expected to be

The result wasn't what it was expected.

The result wasn't what it was expected to be.

Why is the first sentence the only correct one? Is there any rational behind it?

What? The first sentence is not correct.

These are your choices.

The result wasn't [what was expected / what it was expected to be].

The second is a bit wordy, so I'd guess the first is preferred by most people. Even so, both are grammatically correct.

Did you copy it correctly? That "it" in the first one looks very wrong.

Yes, sir, I did copy it correctly.

Hmm. Very strange. I'm surprised to hear this. Maybe that first sentence was the example of the common mistake? That's what it looks like to me.

Otherwise, I can only conclude that it's a misprint.

I must say that I totally agree with CalifJim here.
The object in the first sentence [what was expected] equates to "it", so adding an "it" must be a mistake.

The sentence should read: "The result wasn't what was expected."
