THE Congress leadership finally asserted itself on Sunday night in a belated attempt to seize the high moral ground and asked Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor to resign in the wake of the controversy surrounding the IPL Kochi franchise.
It was the considered view of the Congress core group that unless the unsavory
drama was capped, it threatened to
suck the government and the party into it, said sources. More important, the core group saw the IPL controversy as a roadblock to crucial bills in Parliament.
Tharoor, a writer and a former Under Secretary General in the United Nations, has thus earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first minister in the UPA-II to go under the cloud of corruption charges.
The Prime Minister summoned Tharoor late in the night to his Race Course Road residence, after a meeting of the Congress Core Group, and asked him to tender his resignation.
The first indications that he was on his
way out came when Tharoor went to the Prime Minister's residence at night in a private car with
out the beacon light.
Throughout the day, he avoided the media.
Tharoor had met the Prime Minister for 45 min
utes earlier in the day, too, and explained his position.
Dr Manmohan Singh hinted that he may be shown the door but asked him to await
the outcome of the Congress core group meeting.
Please explain to me the emboldened parts.
Though I guess "capped" means "resolved" and "suck" means "cause trouble"
