Grammar

was and were

What's the difference between:
I remember the last time we met as if it was yesterday
I remember the last time we met as ii it were yesterday.
Thanks.

Personally, I like ‘were’ in this case – it sounds so much more grand. I believe it is called the ‘subjunctive tense’ and is somewhat archaic. However, English itself is archaic; so without grammar rules, we would likely stop using it.

  • Those of us who remember using it likely will continue to do so.
  • New graduates from schools likely won’t.

"was" is informal; "were" is formal.
