Grammar

was and were

Hi everybody.

Recently been reading Revenge Of The Lawn; in the introduction, however, I'm confused about the usage of was in the following sentences:

"I looked around.
There was the bikers.
And there was Mac and Don."

To my ear, were seems a bit clumsy to use here, but is it technically correct?

Thanks to all those who have helped me so far.
