Was able to call him to get parts

Hi,

He began by recalling that he had wanted to build a frequency counter when he was twelve, and he was able to look up Bill Hewlett, the founder of HP, in the phone book and call him to get parts.

*** *** ***

The sentence "He was albe to look up Bill Hewlett in the phone book and call him to get parts".

Here "to get parts" seems to mean "in order to get parts".

Can this also mean "He was able to call him and also was able to get part"?

i.e. "He was able to call him and he managed(=succeeded) to get parts"

Can this also mean "He was able to call him and also was able to get part"?-- I don't think so, because if that is what is meant, it is already taken care of earlier in the sentence: 'He was able to..'.
