Was

Are both of these correct? What do they mean?

1. A very nice aspect of our existing design was that we could set up the floor plan in a single spot, and the rest of the of it was completely independent of it. (Is it corret to use 'could' here? I have 'was', so should it be 'could have' instead?

2. A very nice aspect of our existing design was that we could have set up the floor plan in a single spot, and the rest of the of it would have been completely independent of it.

Thanks.
