In this case "warmest" is the better option. However, the question could benefit from a complete rewording.

"Of the following materials, which is the best insulator: thermos, aluminum, or plastic?"

notice the use of "best" instead of "better"

I believe the original poster had in mind two different types of thermoses.

At one time, it may be worth noting, Thermos was a trademarked term and referred specifically to a brand of insulated container. Now it's used generically.

Also, I would say "maintains the temperature longer" or "keeps the food warmer" but not "maintains the food warmer."
