Warm VS warm up

Howdy!

Is there any difference between to warm and to warm up as far as meaning is concerned?

Thanks a lot!

I'd need a sentence, but in the sense of preparing for an exercise or an effort, only 'warm up' is acceptable.

Thanks.

What about a sentence like this:

First you need to warm / warm up the stock and then add some breadcrumbs to it.

Either will work ('up' is a sort of intensifier), but I think 'heat' would be more usual.
