Ward- in the ward/in a ward/on the ward in BE

Which form is consdered to be correct in British EnglishL

I would like to describe one picture and I would like to say: There are two people in the picture: a woman and a man. They are in a ward or the ward? I don;t mean any particular word or maybe I should say on the ward?
