War in 1744 and English
I am a university student studying the state of the English language in the 17th century and the 18th.
History tells us that in the year 1744 Louis XV in France declared war against England, actually beginning the war at sea and in the colonies against England.
I have been wondering if this war resulted in linguistic nationalism among the English people then, making them hate to use the French language.
I want to ask for someone's view, hopefully with relevant books and articles. This is because Samuel Johnson stated in the "Preface" to his English dictionary, which was published in 1755, that he wanted to stop the "babble of a dialect of France" among the people.
