Wants/wanted

Hi, teachers.

I got a question remaining to be figured out:

Mother wanted to be a good provider, a role she ______ since her marriage to Father.

A shoulders B shouldered C is shouldering D has been shouldering

Because of the wanted, I wonder whether B or D is actually correct.

And to my ear, the quiz writer gave a weird sentence.

Would you please tell me which is better?

Thank you very much.

Mister Micawber'Since' makes only the present perfect reasonable here.

Dear Micawber,I once learnt:

Michael Swan's 3rd edtion: Item522, p513

However, present and past tenses are also occasionally found, especially in sentences about changes.
You're looking much better since your operation.
