Wants vs wanted

If I were a millionaire, I would send my son for further studies at a prestigious university overseas if he wants/wanted to study there.

I think "wanted" is correct. Right?

Thank you.

Thank you Mister Micawber.

So if I use "wants" it means it is present. I can send my son abroad if I suddenly become a millionaire.

If "wanted" it means it is a past situation meaning I didn't send my son abroad.

Is my thinking correct?

Kelly TanIs my thinking correct?
No. It has to do with whether your son still wishes to go abroad now.
