Wanted never tenses
Hi
I saw some sentences on lyrics and books
But I'm confused about some tense
see below:
1)I never wanted to be a singer. <---The writer says (why use past tense? Isn't it Present perfect or present tense?)
2)They get the fairness they needed provided to ( they need the fairness,so why not They get the fair that is needed or
They get the fairness that they need ?)
3)beinf a reporter isn't the career i always wanted. (same. why wanted?)
Sometimes, I get confusion with "never". I don't know which tense i shoud use.
What's the difference between:
we never changed / we never change ?

Sorry, I'm still confused
3)being a reporter isn't the career i always wanted. (same. why wanted?-- Why not? Simple past is fine, and no doubt it fits the meter of the song better.)

'Isn't' does not necessarily affect 'wanted'
This isn't the hat I wanted. (I want no hat now, though I am looking at one now.)
