"Want vs. would like"

Hello everbody!

If you're in a cafe, would you say "I want a coffee or I would like a coffee" ?

Thank you!

Top answer

"Would like" is much more polite, especially with "please" added. "want" is demanding, and not as polite.

Thank you! But which is more likely to hear in this situation?

Would like.

I suppose it depends who you hang out with.

Some people may even say "Give me a medium coffee." I'd find that appalling.

Ordering a cup of coffee:

I'd like a cup of coffee, please.

I'd like a cup of coffee.

I'll have a cup of coffee.

I'll have (a) coffee.

Coffee, please.

Just coffee. / Just a coffee. / Coffee.

Not I want.
