Want to know about had

I know about past perfect tense but when i read novels at someplaces some sentences doesn't follow it

.

It seems had is used to indicate a specific time frame in the past

Is it true ?

Can i use had in a single sentence without any reference point of past to indicate something happend in specific time frame.

For example :- she had gone.

His eyes had closed

He had left the house

Etc.

Please i already know about past perfect tense i just want to know that is one can use had in a single sentence to indicate something happened in the past in a specific time frame.
