wander/stray

Hello,
How would you differentiate between: "I wandered/strayed a few blocks into the wrong direction and got hopelessly lost."? I think and I have been told that "stray" is more unintentional and "wander" is more deliberate. If a friend of mine and I went for a long walk, we could get carried away and wander off the road/in another direction/etc. Does "wander off the (main) road" make any sense?
