Wallet or purse

Which of the two would be more appropriate?

He is still looking for the wallet/purse he has lost. Was there a lot of money or something really important in it?

Top answer

Men usually have wallets, which are flat and fit in the pocket. Women may have them too, but if so they are sometimes kept in the purse, which has a handstrap or a shoulder strap. In other countries men may carry a little bag of money which could be called a purse, though if it has a linear opening at the top, for example a zipper, then it is a pouch.
