Walked (on) this earth

Many bird species have walked this earth, though, and that's all they could do. They are called flightless birds.

Hi,

Why it's "walked this earth" in the above instead of "walked on this earth?" Thanks.

Top answer

It is a set phrase: 'to walk the earth' = live, exist. It is a kind of word joke here, since most birds don't walk; they fly.
