Mammoths walked the earth 4.8 million years ago and died out during the last Ice Age.

Mammoths walked on the earth 4.8 milliion years ago and died out during the last Ice Age.

Do both of the above two sound right? If yes, are there subtle nuances?

"Something walked the earth" is a pretty standard phrase, but there's no difference if you use "the."
