Walk on (the) sand

Hi,

Is it walk on sand or walk on the sand in general contexts?
For example: I like walking on (the) sand on sunny days.
And another example: You could throw the weapon in (the?) sand and nothing would happen to it.
Does 'the' belong in these sentences?

thank you
