Walk closer

Are these both correct:

1) I was walking on the sidewalk and there was this fellow who was walking in the same direction. I decided to walk closer to him so that maybe I could start a conversation with him. so I reduced the distance between us. Now we were almost walking shoulder to shoulder.

2) The animal was sitting there staring at me. I decided to walk closer to it because it looked harmless. I realized that I had made a mistake when it hissed.

'Walk closer' has been used with different meanings in the two texts.

Gratefully,
Navi.
