The latter is no doubt correct. The former should read 'as many as X miles'.

To me, a sentence like

I walked for much miles before I reached my destination.

seems incorrect.

£6 is too much to pay for that.

I don't see anything wrong with any of your examples but I still maintain my position that the original sentence must use 'as many as six miles'.

I think it can be, if we think of 'six' as a number, but I think it can be 'much' if we think of 'six miles' as a quantity. I suspect we are going to have to agree to differ on that.
