Waiting for (on)?

All my life, I used the sentence, "I am waiting FOR my friend to call." Now, all I hear is, "I am waiting ON my my friend to call". Waiting ON used to be the job of a waiter, so what is the correct sentence?

Either one is correct, though "waiting for" is by far the more common usage in America. "Waiting on" is more British and/or Northeastern upper class American--it is far more formal, in other words.

I'm not sure about that. "Waiting on" is extremely popular in Kentucky, where I currently live. I'm not sure if the phrase has just become more popular or if it was just always common usage in the South.
