wait vs await

Hi,

Do you think wait for and await have the same meaning and are interchangeable?

(We are awaiting results = We are waiting for results (1) ?

to await a reply =to wait for a reply (2) ?

A warm welcome awaits all our customers. =A warm welcome waits for all our customers.(3)?

A surprise awaited us on our arrival.= A surprise waited for us on our arrival. (4) ? )


If not, how can we distinguish their meanings?

You need for with wait: to wait for something.

1) If the subject is a person or animal, use wait for:

We are waiting for results.
The dog is waiting for his dinner.

2) If the subject is not a person or animal, use await:

A warm welcome awaits ...
A surprise awaits ...

if any of you were so inclined you might find the dictionary to be invaluable. Await can and often is used with reference to people. What did happen to elementary education?
