Wail off

Hi,

"I heard an ambulance wailing off quite close to our house."

"The sound of an ambulance wailing off freaks me out."

Are these sentences natural? I saw the word 'wail off' in a book but I'm not sure if it can be used in a conversation.

Thank you!

I have never heard of "wail off" as a phrase. It is possible that these two words may occur together other than as a phrase, e.g. "I heard the sirens wailing off in the distance" (the phrase is "off in the distance"). Perhaps this is the kind of thing you saw, but I would need to see the full context.
