Hello Mister Micawber

I think when I use "what books?" , it means a casual way to make a question.

or Maybe it’s a spoken English.

But when I use "what kinds of books?”, it means a more formal way to make a question.

please offer your great answers.

Thanks again.

No, formality has nothing to do with it, Jacky. In fact, almost always they have the same meaning.

1. What books do you read?-- This might be asking for book titles, but usually we read a book only once, so it usually means the same as #2.

2. What kinds of books do you read?-- Mysteries, adventure, etc.

3. What fruit do you like?-- Apples
