Vt vs. Vi

Dear people,

Suppose you say:

The development of smartphones and other portable

devices that connect to the Internet has certainly made

our lives easier.

Would you use development as the abstract noun which

comes from develop as a transitive verb or an intransitive one?

Please kindly help me develop an understanding of

this type question that I sometimes get confused about.

I speak Japanese and when I put English sentences into Japanese,

this sort of problem is not trivial.

Thank you.

Ray
