% vs percent

Is it frowned upon to use '35%' (for concision) vs '35 percent' in running text? Many say that the percent sign should be reserved for numbers used in statistical data within tables.

I would think I always use % unless I am talking about percent as a concept ("to calculate the percent, divide by 100"). d

I think it is basically a style choice. I seem to recall that Scientific American, for example, insists on "percent" in running text. By the way, in the UK, it is traditionally written as two words: per cent.
