Vowels and syllables

My sons homework is asking how many vowels are in each students name. I feel really dumb right now. He is in the second grade, and I can not even help him. I keep wanting to do syllables. How many vowels are in the name Anai? Is it different from syllables? I cant understand what this teacher is asking, and my son will not help me figure it out either. He first said that she clapped out the name and thats how she figured it out, then says she did not. The paper says; How many Vowels are in each name.

Anonymous Anai There are three vowels: a, a, & i. There may be the same number of syllables or an additional one depending on how the name is pronounced. The first A is definitely a syllable.
