Hi

Can you help?

What is the meaning of this saying "If wishes were horses beggars would ride"?

Top answer

Beggars have a lot of wishes, but few of them come true. That is, you may wish for any sort of extravagant thing you want; it doesn't mean you'll get it. This saying often comes up as a response to someone's wishing for something very unrealistic.

Hi,

Beggars have lots of wishes, but they do not benefit from them.

Thank you Clive.

Could you tell whether they mean the same?

I have a wish but I cannot have it fullfilled.

I have a wish but I do not benefit from it.

Hi,

Could you tell whether they mean the same?

I have a wish but I cannot have it fullfilled. Doesn't sound bad.

But we most commonly say of a wish, 'My wish came true / didn't come true'.

I have a wish but I do not benefit from it.

Thank you Clive.

I wanted to know the meaning of 'I have a wish but I do not benefit from it' after seeing the example in your thread.

Does it have different meaning there?

Help me, please.
