Vote to or vote for sb

Hi.

Is there any difference between vote to sb and vote for sb?

This is something that I sometimes can choose the correct preposition intuitively, but I do not know the reason for it.

For an intance, in the following context, I have the impression that for fits better without knowing the reason.

Ex. I think everyone should have a chance to vote for their favorite stars in the oscar.

Vote to sounds strange to my ears in the above example

Thanks in advance for your help and time

Regards

As far as I know, there is no 'vote to sb'. You can vote to change the drinking age or vote to elect more Republicans, but you can only vote for a candidate or a party or a cause.

Thanks Mister Micawber.

You are right. I was wrong about vote to sb. As you said, we can vote to do sth.

I know we have phases like vote sb in or vote sb out. But do we have vote sb without any preposition.

Can we say?

I voted him in the last election.

Thanks for your help

(X) I voted him in the last election.-- No, not this. You can say these:

I voted for him.

I voted Republican.

Thank you very much.

Having checked Longman Dictionary I came across a phrase vote in favor of sb.

Is it synonymous with vote for sb?

1. I voted for him

2. I voted in favor of him.

I think the second one is less formal. Am I right?

Thanks

I think I made a mistake again.

We vote in favor of sth not sb.

I think it is the same as

I voted republicants.

I vote in favor of republicants.

Thank you

"I voted yes to the bill of right act"

is that correct?
